Contact lenses are a convenient and effective alternative to eyeglasses. They sharpen your vision without affecting your appearance or getting in the way of activities. However, not everyone finds it easy to find comfortable and well-fitting contacts.
Here are six common reasons some people struggle with contact lenses.
1. Dry Eyes
Dry eye syndrome can make wearing contacts uncomfortable. You could develop this condition when your eyes don’t make sufficient or good-quality tears. Scleral lenses, which have a fluid reservoir to keep eyes moist, can help those with dry eyes.
2. Astigmatism
Irregularities in the eye’s cornea or lens can cause astigmatism. Those with this condition could have blurred or distorted vision. Regular contacts may not provide sufficient correction, but toric lenses designed for astigmatism are a better option.
3. Presbyopia
After age 40, many people develop presbyopia, which makes it hard to focus on close objects. Multifocal contact lenses can help manage this condition. Another option is monovision therapy which corrects one eye for distance and the other for nearby.
4. Post-Refractive Surgery
Those who have had LASIK or other eye surgeries may notice changes in their eye shape, making it harder to fit contacts. Specialized lenses, like scleral lenses, can offer comfort and clear vision for these individuals.
5. Keratoconus
This progressive eye disease thins the cornea, leading to a cone-like bulge. Rigid gas permeable (RGP) and scleral lenses are often used to correct keratoconus. If you have this condition, your doctor might also recommend hybrid lenses. They feature a rigid center and a soft outer ring.
6. Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis (GPC)
Giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) is an allergic reaction that causes inflammation under the eyelids, making it uncomfortable to wear contacts. Daily disposable lenses or RGPs, which reduce protein buildup, can help manage GPC.
