Six One Six Vision Center offers high-quality contact lenses as a reliable vision correction method. While they are among the safest options, their improper handling may cause eye infections. Let your trusted optometrist share some dos and dont’s when it comes to caring for your contact lenses.
DON’T: Forget to Wash Your Hands Before Touching Your Contact Lenses
Always wash your hands thoroughly when touching your contact lenses to prevent hand-eye transmission of dirt or disease-causing germs. It’s best to use an antibacterial or a mild, non-cosmetic soap when doing so. You may dry your hands afterward with a lint-free towel.
DO: Clean Them Frequently
Since contact lenses are directly applied on your eyes, cleaning them regularly is an important step. You may place them in between your fingers or against your palm and rub them gently. Eye care specialists explain that this produces mild friction, which helps in effectively removing surface deposits.
DON’T: Use Other Solutions
We may prescribe a certain lens solution depending on the type of material used for your lenses. Water or other cleaning solvents may be incompatible with your lenses and cause them damage. They may also harbor microorganisms which may cause eye irritations or infections.
DO: Follow Your Replacement Schedule
Contact lenses have a recommended wearing schedule to prevent lens wear-induced problems, like eye irritation from wearing them for an extended time. Daily disposable lenses, for example, are ideally worn once. Frequent replacement lenses are replaced every month or at least every four months. The extended wear may be used as long as six months unless your expert eye doctor advises otherwise.
Make sure to clean your contact lens case regularly as well and replace it once every three months. For more contact lens care tips, call us at (208) 514-1858 or fill out our form. We serve Boise, Eagle, and surrounding Idaho areas.
