When I started optometry school as a newly nearsighted student, I found myself getting tired of having to lug a pair of glasses around all the time to see board in school, only to have to take those glasses off to put on my sunglasses when I went outdoors. While daily contact lenses were tolerable, at the time the comfort in the lenses was not where my dry eyes needed it to be. Then I heard about these contact lenses that gently reshape the front part of the eye while you sleep, called CRT or orthokeratology lenses. It is kind of like a temporary LASIK – if you wear the contacts overnight, you will not need any glasses or contacts all day long. So I said sign me up! I have been wearing these contact lenses for many years now, and although the comfort of daily contact lenses and the technology in glasses has changed a lot since then, there’s simply nothing I have found to be as comfortable as having nothing on face my or on my eyes. If I forget to wear the contact lenses one night – no big deal! I just wear my normal glasses or contact lenses instead for the next day. An additional benefit to this type of contact lens is that studies have shown that it reduces the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) by about 40%. So for children or adults that are continuing to have a higher and higher prescription each year, we highly recommend this lens. I have been pleased that since I started wearing these contact lenses, my prescription has not changed one bit.
