Reliable Ways to Manage AMD and Digital Eye Strain

As your visual health advocate, Six One Six Vision Center is committed to educating families in the community about proper eye care. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a vision condition affecting millions of people, so our reliable optometrist is here to discuss our recommended treatment for this condition. We’ll also share some tips to prevent digital eye strain, another vision disorder that more and more Americans are experiencing due to increasing use of digital devices.

Managing AMD

AMD occurs when the macula, a component of your eye, begins to deteriorate due to aging. You may experience impaired central vision, blurry eyesight, and blank spots across your visual field. AMD has two major classifications: dry, which is usually asymptomatic, and wet, which involves the growth of abnormal, fragile blood vessels.

Although there is no definite cure for AMD yet, our expert eye doctor explains that there are ways to delay its progression. Eating nutritious foods, like vegetables and deep-water fish, may lower your risk of developing AMD. For more severe cases, we may recommend laser therapies or certain injectable medications.

Preventing Digital Eye Strain

Digital eye strain is a feeling of visual discomfort after spending prolonged hours in front of your computer or other blue light-emitting devices. The 2015 American Eye-Q® Survey results point to indoor office work as the top driver of this eye problem.

If you are suffering from this condition, we suggest using computer eyeglasses that are specially designed to filter blue rays. Make sure to observe the “20-20-20” rule as wel: after using your smartphones and other electronic devices for 20 minutes, rest your eyes on an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
