Being a teenager is hard. Between school, extracurricular activities, summer jobs and socializing, you are probably just as stressed as many adults. If you wear eyeglasses, they may be adding to your stress if you don’t like how they look or because they get in the way of everyday activities. Here are some things you can do when you want to wear contact lenses, but your parents aren’t all the way on board.
Show Your Responsible Side
One reason many parents won’t let their children wear contacts is because they worry about them becoming lost or even causing an infection if not used properly. For this reason, you need to show you are responsible.
- Do your chores on time and without being asked.
- Do your homework on time and do your best to get good grades.
- Try your best in your activities and at your job.
- Don’t miss curfew or break other rules.
Do Your Research
Before you approach your parents, research contact lenses. Consider whether you have problems like dry eyes, which make it hard for you to wear contacts. Gather information about the pros and cons as well as the different types of lenses. This shows your parents that you are serious and willing to put in the work to prove you are making a sound decision.
Sit Down and Talk
Finally, ask your parents to sit down and talk with you. Present your information and be prepared for questions about how you will pay for them and whether you will take care of them. If contacts would be beneficial for you because of sports or other activities, be sure to point this out. Listen with an open mind and try not to get angry or overly emotional if things don’t go your way. You can always talk to them again at a later date.
If they do say yes, you will need to visit an optometrist in Boise, ID. Dr. Ryan or Dr. Lauren can help you determine which contacts will best meet your needs based on your activities and preferences.
