4 Important Facts About Myopia You Need to Know

Structural irregularities in your eyes can impair the light bending process, resulting in refractive errors. One of the most common refractive errors is myopia, or nearsightedness. Read on as your trusted optometrist from Six One Six Vision Center shares four important facts about this condition:

  1. Myopia is a result of an overly curved cornea or a longer-than-normal eye shape. These structural irregularities cause light rays to settle in front of the retina instead of directly on top of it, leading to problems seeing distant objects clearly. With myopia, your close-range vision remains intact.
  2. Headaches, eye fatigue, and even shoulder pains are common symptoms of myopia. Since myopia often develops during childhood, your expert eye doctor advises being observant of your kids’ habits. Squinting, head tilting, and sitting too close to the TV are some telltale signs that your child needs to have their eyes checked for myopia or other refractive errors.
  3. Heredity is a major risk factor for myopia. If any of your relatives are nearsighted, you are at a higher risk of developing the disorder too.
  4. There are treatments available now to help slow the progression of myopia! At your next eye appointment, ask Dr. Huber whether some form of myopia control is available for you or your child, to prevent the eyes from becoming more nearsighted each year, which consequently increases their risk for things like glaucoma, early cataracts, and retinal holes, tears, and detachments.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of myopia, we suggest heading to your reliable eye clinic as soon as possible. We will perform a comprehensive eye exam that includes a refraction. Once we identify your refractive error, we can create an effective treatment plan.

The most common remedy for myopia is wearing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses for improved visual acuity. We offer various styles and designs to match your personality and suit your lifestyle.
