AMD Awareness Month: 3 Common Myths Debunked

Despite the abundance of literature available online, there are still a lot of misconceptions surrounding age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In an effort to spread awareness, the eye care specialists here at Six One Six Vision Center highlight three of the most common myths about AMD and debunk each of them in turn.

Myth #1: AMD Always Leads to Blindness

While AMD may contribute to gradual vision loss, it is a myth that it will always lead to complete blindness. AMD affects the macula, the most central part of the retina, which is responsible for central vision. Some people that develop AMD present with mild changes that don’t greatly impact vision, and won’t impact their quality of life. Even if you do develop an advanced form of AMD, your peripheral vision will remain functional.

Myth #2: AMD Is Common Among Young People

Contrary to what you may hear or read online, AMD is very rare among people under the age of 40. If you are experiencing eye symptoms that seem like they could be AMD, visit your optometrist right away because it is likely you have a different condition, which you may need treatment for.

Myth #3: You Will Know Right Away If You Have AMD

Unfortunately, many people currently living with AMD have no idea they have the condition. This is because only advanced AMD causes vision impairment, which is why it is very important to have your eyes checked out regularly.
