Eyeglasses have been the most common vision correction tool for centuries, yet myths about them still persist — some of which might discourage a person from visiting their local optometrist. In today’s post, Six One Six Vision Center debunks some of the most common yet persistent myths and misconceptions about eyeglasses.
Some people mistakenly believe that wearing eyeglasses can cause damage to the eyes. The truth is eyeglasses merely adjust the way light enters the eyes; they do not cause any physical changes to the eyes. It is possible that your vision will worsen over the years, but this is not due to wearing glasses. When this happens, your optometrist will simply update your prescription.
Wearing someone else’s eyeglasses can cause discomfort because the prescription isn’t right for you, but don’t worry, it won’t actually damage your eyes. As mentioned, eyeglasses simply change the way light enters your eyes. If your own eyeglasses are causing discomfort, talk to your eye doctor about changing your prescription.
If you spend a significant part of your day staring at a screen, whether for work or pleasure, you may suffer from eye strain and dry eyes. You may even suffer disruption in your sleeping patterns that result in stress. While these issues can cause discomfort and even require treatment in some cases, they won’t actually affect permanently damage your eyesight.
Just because you wear eyeglasses doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy an active lifestyle. From prescription swim goggles to impact-resistant active-wear eyeglasses, there are many protective eyewear options for any activity you want to pursue.
