Effective Tips for Managing Dry Eyes This Fall

Dry eye syndrome often peaks during the fall months. As temperatures start to drop, the cool, dry autumn air may cause changes to your tear consistency, resulting in dry eyes. To help maintain your visual health this fall, your trusted eye care specialist from Six One Six Vision Center shares some tips for managing this condition.

Keep Your Eyes Well Lubricated

The colder, drier air of fall can cause the tears in your eyes to evaporate too quickly, leading to dry eye syndrome. To improve your visual comfort, we may recommend applying artificial tears. Just like natural tears, artificial tears contain water, oil, and mucus to keep your eyes properly lubricated.

Prepare Healthy Seafood Dishes

A natural way of reducing the risk of dry eyes and maintaining your visual comfort this fall is to include seafood in your daily intake. Your reliable eye doctor explains that cold-water fish contain substantial amounts of omega-3 essential fatty acids, which help maintain moisture in your eyes. Some good sources are mackerel, salmon, tuna, halibut, trout and scallops.

Stay Hydrated

It is essential to drink at least eight glasses of water every day to stay hydrated. Doing so also helps maintain lubrication in your eyes, preventing dry eye symptoms.

Always Protect Your Eyes

Another effective way to combat dry eyes is to wear safety eyewear, especially when going outside. The lenses can act as a barrier, keeping cold breezes from reaching your eyes.

Have Your Eyes Checked

Visiting your expert optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam is one of the best ways to safeguard your visual health all year round. We may also prescribe anti-inflammatory ointments during your visit for your better visual comfort. We can also teach you how to properly clean your eyelids, as this can help reduce inflammation.
