Helpful Tips on Caring for Your Eyeglasses

Your eyeglasses are meant to give you clear vision while also providing some form of protection against harmful UV rays and radiation. Because of this, you should know how to properly take care of your glasses. Our eye care specialists have a few tips on keeping your glasses in good condition.

Rinse Regularly

Wiping your eyeglasses with a clean piece of cloth is good, but you still need to wash it every now and then. If you can, rinse your glasses with clean water every few days. This is especially true if you’ve been somewhere dusty, since simply wiping off dirt particles can cause scratches on the lenses.

Use Recommended Cleaners Only

It might be tempting to use household spray-on cleaners to keep your eyeglass lenses crystal clear. However, any optometrist will tell you to avoid it because certain chemicals can damage the glass or the UV coating. Use only cleaning solutions specifically made for eyeglasses.

Use Cotton

Wiping the lens with just any kind of material runs the risk of causing scratches on the lenses. According to experts, you should only use cotton fabric for wiping because other types of fabric like nylon and polyester are abrasive. Suffice to say, you should avoid wiping your glasses on your shirt or handkerchief.

Hold Properly When Cleaning

When wiping or washing the lenses, make sure you’re holding the glasses in the middle. This will prevent too much pressure on one  side, which could risk causing the frames to bend. That being said, if you think the frame is already bent, go to an eye doctor and ask if you need to have your eyeglasses replaced or re-fitted.
