Eyeglasses and contact lenses are relatively recent inventions, but humanity has been dealing with poor eyesight since the dawn of time. How did people in the past deal with poor vision, when the field of eye care was rudimentary at best? Find out in today’s post from Six One Six Vision Center.
How People in the Past Dealt With Myopia
Aristotle wrote about nearsightedness, also known as myopia, around 350 B.C. However, even though myopia has been around for centuries, not much is known about how the condition was managed before the first lenses for nearsighted people were invented in the 15th century in Europe.
Even though the profession of an optometrist didn’t exist until relatively recently, people with nearsightedness still found ways to get by. For instance, people with myopia were historically valued in certain contexts. Myopic people were found to be ideal for illuminating manuscripts and painting Bibles. These tasks required making tiny and precise brushstrokes.
