Children’s eyes are still developing, which is why being proactive about your child’s visual health is so important. One of the best steps you can take is to schedule regular eye exams for your child. Read on as your eye doctor from Six One Six Vision Center discusses how often children need to have eye exams.
Recommended Eye Exam Schedule for Children
Your baby should have their first eye exam between six months old and one year. We’ll check their eyes for any irregularities and see if their vision developmental milestones are on track. Upon turning three years old, they should undergo another eye exam.
Your child’s eyesight plays a huge role in their learning and development. For this reason, you need to bring your child for another exam before they enter the kindergarten, or around age five. This will ensure that if your child has a vision issue that needs to be addressed, we detect it before they begin school and may prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses. After age five, your child should continue having eye exams yearly, or as recommended by your optometrist.
The InfantSEE® Program
Six One Six Vision Center is a proud partner of the American Optometric Association® in implementing InfantSEE. Under this public health program managed by Optometry Cares®, participating optometry clinics will provide infants between six and twelve months old their first comprehensive eye exam for free. This movement aims to highlight the importance of giving children proper eye care as early as possible. Your optometrist will assess your child’s eye movements and check for signs of any refractive errors or other visual health problems.
