Ortho-K 101: Corneal Reshaping to Manage Refractive Errors

Correcting refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, often involves prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses, or even LASIK surgery. Your eye doctor may also recommend orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k, or corneal reshaping therapy (CRT), which has helped reduce dependence on corrective eyewear without the need for surgery.

Read on as Six One Six Vision Center shares the things you need to know about this vision treatment option.

What Are Ortho-K Lenses?

Orthokeratology involves reshaping of the cornea or the front surface of your eye through the use of gas permeable contact lenses. Simply wear ortho-k lenses overnight and enjoy clear eyesight the next day without use of corrective eyewear. Highly porous gas permeable lenses can be used for orthokeratology.

Which Vision Disorders Can Ortho-K Correct?

Ortho-K lenses can temporarily correct myopia, as well as minor cases of astigmatism. Consult your optometrist to find out whether this corneal correction technique could be used to manage your eye condition.

What Are the Important Things to Expect When You Begin Ortho-K?

Your eye doctor will measure the curvature of your cornea using corneal topography. This is a pain-free procedure that allows the doctor to map your eye’s surface to determine which gas permeable lenses will fit you. You may need to try a series of temporary lenses before reaching the desired prescription.

Wearing ortho-k lenses may sometimes be uncomfortable with your eyes open, with your eyes closed while you’re sleeping, you won’t notice them at all.
