Prescription Sunglasses or Photochromic Lenses

Imagine you’re about to head out on a bright sunny day. While you want to wear sunglasses to help reduce the sun’s glare, you can’t because you need your eyeglasses to see where you’re going. This is a dilemma that people who wear eyeglasses have to face quite often.

Fortunately, Six One Six Vision Center offers photochromic lenses and prescription sunglasses as solutions to this problem. So, which one should you choose? Here’s what your eye doctor has to say about each option:

Prescription Sunglasses

Prescription sunglasses look like regular sunglasses. They are tinted in various colors, depths and even gradients. However, they are fitted with prescription lenses to correct your vision. This means they are designed not only to make you look fashionable, but also to give you clear vision.

Your optometrist may recommend prescription sunglasses for eyeglass wearers who have active lifestyles. Most of the time, prescription sunglasses offer more than UV-protective features; they are also highly impact resistant, making them perfect for participating in outdoor sports or other recreational activities. They’re great for conditions or activities that involve intense glare, such as when you’re driving or engaging in snowboarding or other winter activities.

Photochromic Lenses

Photochromic lenses, like the popular brand Transitions®, are light-adaptive lenses. This means that when you go out in the sun, your lenses automatically darken to shield your eyes from the sun. How dark they get depends mainly on the intensity of the ultraviolet rays to which they are exposed. Once you go inside, the photochromic lenses will gradually become clear again.

Photochromic lenses are like eyeglasses and sunglasses in one, which is why they’re very convenient. You won’t have to carry around two pairs of eyeglasses whenever you’re going outside. You’re also getting two eyewear functions for the price of one.

At Six One Six Vision Center, we carry high-quality eyewear from the trusted names in the industry, such as SALT, Eco, Modo, and Ovvo Optics.
