Pupillary Distance: Why Must It Be Measured Accurately?

Pupillary Distance (PD) is one of the measurements you need when getting prescription eyeglasses. During your visit to the eye clinic, your optometrist will measure this before fitting lenses to your eyeglass frames.

What Is Pupillary Distance?

PD measures the distance between your pupils, which are the dark centers of your eyes that widen to let in light or narrow to focus on a close object. In short, they help you see in the dark or when it’s too bright. Measuring PD ensures your pupils match with the optical center of lenses. If this measurement is inaccurate, the eyeglass prescription won’t be effective, and you could experience headaches and eye strain.

How Is Pupillary Distance Measured?

PD is measured in millimeters. In order to take accurate PD measurements, comprehensive knowledge and technical skills are necessary. That is why you need to visit an eye doctor for proper fitting of your eyeglasses.

Can I Measure PD on My Own?

Nowadays, several people prefer buying eyeglasses online. As a result, a number of websites and apps have come up with misleading do-it-yourself PD measurements. While this can save you from paying a doctor’s fee, you are at risk of getting an inaccurate result.

Remember, even a slight error in PD measurement can lead to vision problems. Make sure you consult a professional to take this measurement for you as they have the necessary training, experience and tools to obtain the correct measurements.
