Tips on Finding the Right Eyewear for Your Kids

Many vision errors develop during childhood, which is why regular optometrist visits are so important. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right type of corrective eyewear for your children.

Understand Their Prescription

Your child will need to undergo a comprehensive eye exam to determine what prescription they need for their eyeglasses or contact lenses. Durign the exam, the eye care specialist will assess their eyes and determine the right lens prescription to correct any vision problems. They’ll also offer tips on what type of eyewear would best suit your children’s needs and lifestyle.

Consider the Eyewear Style

Your child may feel awkward wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses for the first time. Look for eyeglasses that are modern, stylish and age-appropriate, and be sure to involve your child in the selection process as this will help them feel more positive about needing glasses. You can ask your eye care center to help you narrow down some options.

Choose the Right Materials

Kids generally have active lifestyles and aren’t always the most cautious, so opting for lenses made of polycarbonate is a safe bet. This material is impact-resistant and is unlikely to break under high pressure. You can also choose between plastic and metal frames for your child.

Check the Fit

Next, your child will need to be fitted for their new eyeglasses. Make sure that the bridge sits securely on their nose. Don’t forget to ask your eye doctor how to clean and store their frames. If your child chooses contact lenses, make sure they understand how to properly handle and care for them.
