Eye allergies are a common problem, especially during spring. Blooming flowers mean pollen season is here, causing airborne allergens to come into contact with your eyes. This can cause symptoms like red, watery or itchy eyes.
Read on as your trusted eye doctor from Six One Six Vision Center shares some effective tips to keep eye allergy attacks at bay.
Limit Contact With Your Specific Allergen
One of the most effective things you can do to prevent eye allergies is to avoid your specific allergen. If pollen triggers your immune system to initiate an inflammatory response, we advise staying indoors, particularly when the pollen index in your area is high. Plan your outdoor activities at a time when the pollen count is low.
Use Protective Eyewear
If going outside is unavoidable, at least wear protective eyeglasses. Doing so helps block allergens from entering your eyes, reducing your risk of developing eye allergies. Make sure to choose glasses with UV-blocking features for your eyes’ enhanced protection.
Wash Your Hands Frequently
Frequent handwashing helps limit the transfer of allergens from your hands to your eyes. We also recommend keeping your surroundings clean by changing your bed sheets regularly, dusting and vacuuming often and investing in an air purifier.
Have a Spring Eye Exam
Most importantly, visit your optometrist for an eye exam. Having your eyes checked regularly is one of the most reliable ways to maintain your visual health all year round. During your visit, we may prescribe medications to manage your eye allergy symptoms and prevent future allergy attacks.
