Workplace Eye Safety: What You Need to Know

Did you know that over 700,000 people in the U.S. sustain work-related eye injuries every year? 90% of all workplace eye injuries could have been prevented, highlighting the importance of workplace eye safety.

Common Culprits

Eye safety hazards vary depending on the type of task being done and the nature of the workspace, but common causes of injuries include:

  • Flying objects (bits of glass, metal)
  • Tools
  • Chemicals
  • Particles
  • Any combination of the above or other hazards

Signs of an Eye Injury

Eye injuries can lead to serious vision loss so it’s important you know how to identify the signs. If you notice any of the following symptoms, call an eye doctor right away:

  • Trouble seeing

  • Obvious pain

  • Torn or cut eyelids

  • Eye sticking out

  • Eye not moving as well as the other

  • Unusual pupil shape or size

  • Blood in the clear part of the eye

  • Debris under the eyelid or in the eye that can’t be easily removed

Remember: DO NOT try to treat a serious eye injury on your own! Instead, wait for an eye care professional to provide proper treatment.

Ways to Prevent Eye Injuries

  • Know the particular eye safety dangers you are facing with work.

  • Eliminate hazards before beginning work by using machine guards, work screens and the like.

  • Use proper eye protection. Your usual eyeglasses are not enough!
