Workplace Eye Wellness: Best Practices for Employees

At least 700,000 workplace-related injuries occur each year in the United States. Issues with your eyesight can have a significant impact on your everyday life, which is why it’s so important to practice eye safety on the job and to not delay seeing your eye doctor if you are experiencing changes in your vision.

Read on to discover the best practices for workplace eye wellness.

Avoid Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) occurs due to extended exposure to digital screens, such as desktops, tablets and smart phones. Poor posture while using the computer or improper positioning of the device can also cause discomfort. Eyestrain, fatigue, headaches, blurred vision and neck and shoulder pain are common symptoms of CVS.

Giving your eyes a break while working can help prevent CVS. Eye care specialists recommend following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at a spot 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Try to blink more frequently to keep your eyes lubricated too.

Wear Proper Eye Protection

Does your job involve using power tools, such as nail guns or drills? Make sure to wear proper eye protection, such as face shields and filters. The same goes for workers who handle harsh chemicals. Standard eyeglasses won’t give your eyes the protection they need.

See Your Eye Doctor Regularly

Visiting your eye doctor regularly is essential to keeping your eyes healthy and preserving your vision. Keep in mind that poor vision increases the risk for falls and accidents. Your eye doctor can spot signs of eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma, allowing for early detection and more effective treatment.

Keep your eyes healthy by seeing your optometrist regularly. Six One Six Vision Center is here to assist with your eye care needs. Call or text us at (208) 514-1858 to schedule an appointment. We serve patients around Boise and Eagle, ID.
