7 Exercises to Relax Your Eyes and Prevent Eye Strain

In today’s digitally driven world, eye strain has become a prevalent issue, particularly in the workplace. The constant staring at computer screens can lead to symptoms such as dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. For employees or anyone who finds themselves glued to their screens for the bulk of their day, there are several exercises proven to help relax the eyes and mitigate the effects of eye strain. Six One Six Vision Center highlights seven of them here.

  1. Blinking and Yawning. Often overlooked, the act of blinking can significantly moisten the eyes, reducing dryness and irritation. Regular blinking and yawning trigger the eyes to produce tears, which naturally lubricate the eyes. Implementing conscious blinking every 20 minutes during screen time can effectively combat eye dryness and soreness.
  1. Rolling Eyes. An excellent way to relieve the tension in the eye muscles is through rolling your eyes. This exercise can be done by gently rotating the eyes in a circular motion, first in one direction, then the other. Doing this simple exercise for a few seconds every hour can greatly help in relaxing the eye muscles.
  1. Focus Changing. This exercise involves alternating the focus of your eyes from a close object to a distant one. This not only helps in reducing the strain on the eyes but also improves focus and concentration. Simply follow the steps of holding a finger a few inches away from your face, focusing on it, and then slowly moving it away while shifting your focus to a distant object before bringing your focus back to your finger.
  1. Palming. To give your eyes a short break and reduce strain, palming is an effective technique. By closing your eyes and covering them with the palms of your hands without applying pressure, you can rest your eyes. The warmth from your palms helps to relax the muscles around the eyes and alleviate strain.
  1. Vertical and Horizontal Movements. Performing vertical and horizontal eye movements can significantly help in stretching tired eye muscles. With your eyes closed, look up and down, and then left to right, repeating the motion several times. This exercise promotes mobility and flexibility in the eye muscles, reducing the likelihood of strain.
  1. Warm Compresses. Applying a warm compress over closed eyes can help trigger the production of tears, thereby moistening the eyes. The warmth also aids in relaxing the eye muscles, providing relief from the discomfort of eye strain.
  1. The 20-20-20 Rule for Digital Eye Strain Relief. Adhering to the 20-20-20 rule—taking a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes—can be especially beneficial for those experiencing digital eye strain. This helps in reducing the harmful effects of prolonged screen time, safeguarding your vision in the long term.

Incorporating these exercises into your daily routine can significantly reduce the risk of eye strain and improve your overall eye health.
